WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman running back HERB WOODARD (Salem, NJ/Salem) scored a touchdown on a four-year run with 1:55 remaining to lift Assumption College past L.I.U.-C.W. Post, 31-24, in a Northeast-10 Conference football game here FRIDAY.

The Greyhounds, in winning for the first time in nine meetings with C.W. Post moved to a seemingly comfortable 17-3 halftime lead only to have the Pioneers scored two unanswered touchdowns in the third period to tie the game at 17-17. Pioneers quarterback Nick Georgetti completed 12-of-12 passes to set up a pair of Paul Jennings' touchdown runs of two and five yards.

The Greyhounds travel to Pace University SATURDAY in their season's final . . . kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon. The game will be webcast by NE-10 TV. Fans can access the broadcast, and also LIVESTATS, by going to the web site at www.assumptiongreyhounds.com

In the process, junior quarterback TAYLOR HUMPHREY (Lafayette, CA/Miramonte) continued to rewrite the Hounds' record book. He has now completed a record 162 passes in 303 attempts (second most to Chad Carges' 305 in 2000) for 2,122 yards to become the first Greyhound to pass for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He also became the first with over 2,000 yards of total offense... now at 2,177 yards with a game remaining Saturday at Pace.

Also, the Greyhounds' dynamic pass catching duo of senior JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) (48 receptions, 603 yards) and sophomore DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/Narragansett) (58 receptions, 846 yards) continued its record book revisions. Canney is now just eight yards short of John McKeon's record of 854 yards (club years) set in 1976. Beers is the second wide out with two seasons over 600 yards and three over 500 yards.

MATYSIAK, BLAISDELL lead Hounds' soccer all-stars
Senior goalkeeper/captain LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) capped off her career by being named the Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper-of the-Year for the third time in her illustrious career. Matysiak, who owns the Greyhounds' record book finished with 76 games (first), 6970 minutes (first), 0.94 goals-against average (first), 39 wins (first) and 30 shutouts (first). This past season her 1.16 goals-against average in 16 games was among the conference leaders. She was named a first-team all-star for the third time (2004, 05, 07).

On the men's side freshman forward STEPHEN BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman-of-the Year and a second-team all-star. Blaisdell led the Greyhounds with seven goals, six assists for 20 points. He was named to the weekly honor twice.

Sophomore defender KELLEY DEWALT (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) (1 goal, 2 points) of the women's team and junior forward/captain PAUL MURPHY (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) (9 goals, 1 assist, 19 points) and sophomore defender/captain AUSTIN PRETE (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) (3 goals, 6 points) from the men's team all earned third-team honors.

On defense, sophomore middle linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins, FL) joined the 200-tackle club (205)---the first sophomore to reach that total in Hounds' history. With his 4-9--13 tackle performance to lead the team he now has 36-65-101 tackles this season (second in the conference) . . . he led the Northeast-10 last year with 40-64--104 tackles becoming the first to reach triple figures as a first-year player. He is now the first with over 100 tackles in each of his first two seasons.

In addition, senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) (87-108--195) and junior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) (98-97--195) are approaching the 200-tackle mark. Martino also needs just two initial hits for 100 in his career, while Kelly's 25 pressures and his 46.0 tackles for-loss are both the seventh-best in Hounds' history. He also has 25.0 quarterback sacks (third-best) just two behind the career mark set by Brian Gordon (2001-04). Brother JOSH KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) had two to increase his career mark to 21.0 (tied for fifth)---the only brother combo both over 20.0 for a career. The Quinns (Andy '98 and Tom '01) finished with 36.0 between them.

On the second series the Greyhounds drove 59 yards in six plays. Woodard started with a seven-yard run off-right tackle, Humphrey connected with Beers for 13 yards, to freshman tight end ERIC SCHINDLER (Kenilworth, NJ/Brearley) for 43 yards, to freshman wide receiver DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) for eight yards and finally eight more to Beers for the touchdown on an acrobatic catch in the back corner of the end zone. Senior placekicker JON EISELE (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Vermont Academy) kicked the conversion.

After the Pioneers stopped the Hounds on a fourth-down play as tackle Peter Corrigan stuffed freshman MATT SIDEBOTTOM (Franklin, MA/Franklin). Georgetti then completed five-of-six passes for 39 yards to set up an Andrew Kroell 47-yard field goal.

Senior cornerback MIKE MOONAN (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) picked off Georgetti and sped 45 yards for a touchdown with 5:07 left in the half. Eisele's conversion made it 14-3 Greyhounds. After a short punt the Greyhounds moved in for another score---a 31-yard field goal by Eisele. Two Humphrey rushes for nine and 16 yards (the second on a third-down play) highlighted the drive to make it 17-3.

The Pioneers came out flying in the third period with Georgetti leading the way. He completed five straight passes---four to senior wide receiver CHRIS BONE (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) for 30 yards. Jennings capped the eight-play, 58-yard drive with a two-yard dive for the score. Kroell kicked the conversion.

After stopping the Greyhounds, the Pioneers drove 75 yards in seven plays to tie the game. Georghetti completed five straight passes (three to Bone for 31 yards) before Jennings scampered 15 yards and then five for the score. Kroell's conversion made it 17-17. Georgetti was 13-for-13 in the period!

Two series later the Greyhounds struck quickly as Humphrey fired a 62-yard strike to Canney for a score (Eisele kicked the conversion). Georghetti then got it right back with three straight completions . . . 34 yards to wide out Vaughn Dixon, 11 to running back Joe Dickson and finally 47 more to Dixon for the score. Kroell's conversion made it 24-24. The game then came down to each team having one last drive. The Greyhounds drove 74 yards in 11 plays to take the lead and then took turns at making big defensive plays to hold off C.W. Post.

Humphrey connected with junior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) on a 39-yard pass down-the-middle to the Post 16. With the Greyhounds on the seven-yard line, thanks to a Woodard seven-yard scamper, and lining up a 24-yard field goal to get the lead, Post was guilty of a too many-men-on-the-field penalty giving the Hounds a first-and-goal inside the five. Woodard scored on second down from four yards out. Eisele's conversion gave the Hounds a seven-point cushion.

Post then came back down the field. Georghetti completed two quick passes to Dickson for nine and seven yards and then a third for 10 yards to wide out Sheldon Nunn.

On a third-and-six play from the Assumption 32, freshman safety KEITH BATES (Holden, MA/Wachusett) leveled Dickson at the 10-yard line for a incompletion. Georghetti then found Dickson for six yards and a measurement for a first down. A big Zitzmann hit kept him from breaking it for six points.

The Kelly brothers, Jared and Josh, then combined to stop Georghetti on a keeper. Moonan made a touchdown saving deflection at the five and senior cornerback MATT KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) tipped the next pass away at the two with the Kelly brothers harassing Georghetti on the final play of the drive.

LAST YEAR'S GAME: Assumption 19, Pace 0
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College's defense was the story of the game as the Greyhounds stopped Pace University, 19-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference football game here SATURDAY. The Greyhounds limited the Setters to 56 total yards overall (a record minus 38 yards rushing).

Freshman linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) led all tacklers with 3-6--9 tackles to become the first freshman in Hounds varsity history to record over 100 tackles. Zitzmann, who finished with 40-64--104 tackles, led the conference in that department. Senior defensive end JARED KELLY (Canton, MA/Xaverian) finished with two quarterback sacks (career high nine for the season) and two pressures (20 for the season).

Offensively, senior running back Kevin L'Ecuyer (Leominster, MA/Leominster) rushed 28 times for 94 yards and one touchdown, while senior placekicker Mike Tobin (Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked two field goals.

Junior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. He finished the season with 51 receptions-- a new Greyhounds' single-season mark---for 685 yards (fourth-best in Hounds history).

The Greyhounds opened the scoring in the second period converting a blocked punt into a L'Ecuyer one-yard touchdown slant. Sophomore CHRIS MARTINO (Lindcroft, NJ/Middletown South) blocked the punt recovered by sophomore defensive tackle TERRY STANFORD (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) at the Setter 33.

The Hounds would convert two third-down plays into first downs---on a freshman running back LAMMAR CASH (West Haven, CT/Notre Dame) four yard off-tackle run and a junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester West) eight-yard reception over-the-middle. Tobin kicked the conversion.

In the third period they drove 56 yards in five plays after a 12-yard punt return by sophomore JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood). Tharpe completed passes of 14 yards to Longenecker, 11 yards to freshman wide receiver DAVID CANNEY (Templeton, MA/North Middlesex) and, finally, for 29 yards to Beers for the score.

They drove 56 yards in 12 plays with senior quarterback Joe Correia (Melrose, MA/St. John's Prep) completing two passes to Beers for 14 and 29 yards---both on third-down plays and L'Ecuyer scampering 14 yards to the Pace four. Tobin kicked a 21-yard field goal to cap the drive. Following an interception by cornerback Jason Vega, Tobin kicked a second field goal from 30 yards.
