Mitch BAJEMA leads men's
hoop past Saint Anselm;
PLASSKI, PARKER lead women's hoop to 5-2 record
Junior guard
MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) came off-the-bench
to score a team-leading and career-high 14 points, including four three-pointers,
as Assumption College raced past Saint Anselm College, 75-52, in Northeast-10
Conference men's basketball at Laska Gym SUNDAY. The Greyhounds are now 4-1
overall and 2-0 in the conference. They host Bryant University WEDNESDAY at
7:30 p.m.
The game also
featured the Greyhounds tenacious defense with limited the usually sharp-shotting
Hawks to just .281 accuracy (18-for-64) from the floor. They only made four-of-19
from three-point territory. On the otherhand the Greyhounds made 11-of-24 three-pointers
including an amazing eight-of-13 in the second half.
Saint Anselm's
guard Chris Vetrano, the game's leading scorer with 15 points, tied the game
at 32-32 with a pair of free throws with 6:13 left in the first half. The Greyhounds
then went on a 15-4 spurt to take command.
Senior forward
COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) opened the string with
a conventional three-point play on a reverse layin. A steal by senior forward/captain
GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) led to a another Diethorn layin
before the Hawks' forward Giovanni Carenza made two free throws to make it 37-34.
Two free throws
by junior guard/forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem), a layin by freshman
forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) and two long three-pointers
sandwiched around a jumper by the Hawks forward Branimir Zeko made it 47-36.
A 10-5 spurt
in the late in the period keyed by a pair of hoops and two steals by sophomore
guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and
three-pointers by Twomey and senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin)
made it 67-52 with 4:58 left.
Shea ended
with a stat-filled nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Twomey
was the leading rebounds with 10 as the Greyhound enjoyed a substantial 55-36
advantage on the boards, including 16 on the offensive glass. Bluford (13 points,
4 assists), Diethorn (11 points, 9 rebounds) and Foti (11 points, 8 rebounds)
all played well in support roles.
Parker,
Plasski leads women past Saint Anselm, 82-69
Sophomore
forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) scored a career- and season-high
27 points with eight rebounds and four blocks to lead Assumption College women's
basketball past Saint Anselm College, 82-69, in Northeast-10 Conference action
SUNDAY at the Laska Gym. The Greyhounds are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
They host Bryant University WEDNESDAY at 5:30 p.m.
Junior guard/captain
BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) added a season-best 25 points,
while senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy)
added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
With Saint
Anselm leading 21-20 the Greyhounds exploded with a 18-0 run to make it 38-21
to take firm control of the game. Plasski hit a wing jumper as the Hounds took
the lead, senior forward MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) made a turnaround
layin off a steal and feed from Floyd and Floyd converted a layup to make it
26-21.
A layup, free
throw, another layup, and a jumper by Parker and then a three pointer from the
corner by freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy)
and finally a steal and coast-to-coast layin and two free throws by Plasski
made it 38-21 for the Hounds. Assumption led 43-28 at the half.
Saint Anselm
came out strong in the second half cutting the gap to five, 49 44, with a 16-6
mini-spurt. The Hounds then had a 19-5 run to again seize control and move to
a comfortable 68-49 lead. Parker keyed that run with three hoops.
St.
Pierre nets game-winner for Ice Dogs vs. Framingham
Freshman left
wing MATT ST. PIERRE (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton/Hebron) (2-2--4) scored
the game-winner 1;20 into the third period and junior goaltender DAVID PINKHAM
(Malden, MA/Arlington Catholic) turned aside 39 shots as Assumption College
defeated Framingham State College, 5-3, in non-conference ice hockey SATURDAY
at Loring Arena.
Assumption is now 4-4 overall . . . the Ice Dogs also defeated the Rams, 4-3,
in the Dunkin' Donut
Classic hosted by Becker College on November 3.
Framingham
State moved to a 3-1 advantage in the second period scorng three unanswered
goals capped by a power play goal by center Nicholas Glum at 17:34. The Greyhounds
then scored the game's final four goals including two in the final two minutes
of the period.
Senior right
wing PATRICK CIUMMO (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles/ Winchendon School)
(2-0--2) started the comeback with his second goal of the season on a feed from
junior center FRANK BOVA (Princeton, MA/Wachusett) (1 2--3) at 18:10.
Greyhounds leading scorer, senior center LUKE MC DONOUGH (Norfolk, MA/Mt.
St. Charles) (4-5--9) scored his fourth goal on assists from senior JIM TRAHON
(Needham, MA/Needham/Salisbury School) (3-4--7) and senior JOHN ROUTHIER
(Saugus, MA/Malden Catholic/Winchendon School) (3-4--7), to tie the game at
19:02.
St. Pierre
scored his second goal of the season from freshman PATRICK FITZGIBBONS
(Holliston, MA/St. John's) (1-7--8) (his seventh assist of the season) and sophomore
ATTE UOLA (Turku, Finland/Holderness School) (3-3--6) to put the Greyhounds
in front. Trahon's third goal of the season, and second of the game, provided
insurnace at 9:36.
Trahon, who
received the game's first star, opened the scoring for the Greyhounds on a feed
from Mc Donough at 14:07 of the first period. Framingham State's forward Jason
Anderson and defenseman Josh Williams scored before Glum's power play goal gave
the Rams a 3-1 advantage.
Rams goaltender
Peter Dundovich (third star) made 28 saves in net for Framingham State. The
Hounds' Pinkham, who was awarded the game's second star, is now 3-1 on the season
and lowered his goals-against average to 3.53 over 289 minutes. His .907 save
percentage is among the leaders in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic
Assumption College
has had 11 student-athletes named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic
teams in five sports to date. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams,
a student-athlete must have met the following: 1) participated in at least half
of the team's games and be either a starter/significant contributor; 2) achieved
a 3.2 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one academic
year at his/her current institution.

IN NATIONAL POLL: the Greyhounds received votes in the NABC/Division II
national poll this week (they would have been ranked 29th if the poll went that

The 4-1 start
is the best for the Hounds since they were 6-0 to open the 2003 04 season .
. . the team has now posted an overall mark of 994-814 since the beginning of
verified records in 1923-24 . . . it is known that the team played in both of
the years preceding that however records are scarce . . . the Hounds are also
getting close to being the first Division II school in New England with 1,000
wins in both basketball and baseball (886-870-14, since 1912) . . . freshman

Famer women's basketball standout ANN MC INERNEY '88 (Worcester,
MA) is now an assistant coach at Harvard University.
Former football
return standout SETH LOPES has been elected to the Attleboro
Area Hall of Fame. Lopes still holds most of the Greyhounds kickoff return records
after a standout career at North Attleboro High.
