January 30, 2008, Number 19 Hounds
BASKETBALL teams now 32-10, both headed to WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College outscored Saint Anselm College, 11-5, over the last 2:48 en route to a hard-earned 73-71 Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball road victory SATURDAY. The Greyhounds, who have won nine of their last 11 games, are now 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, in sole possession of third-place. They are the most improved team in the region following an 11-17 (9-13 conference) season-record in 2006-07. And, they are now 1,006-821 since the program's inception as the winningest New England Division II program of all time. Saint Michael's College, which won its 1,000th game earlier in the season is now 1,004-934.
HOUND'S HOOP WINNINGIEST IN NORTHEAST-10
Sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) converted a steal and coast-to-coast drive for a layin and a three point margin before Baudinet made both ends of a two-shot foul opportunity again cutting the margin to one at 69-68. Junior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Christian) made both ends of a two-shot foul with 12 seconds left and Diethorn made two more with three second left to put it away. The Hounds, down 41-30 at the break, opened the second half with a 24-11 run with Diethorn contributing six points and Bajema a closing three-pointer as the Greyhounds moved to a 54-52 lead with 9:43 left. Saint Anselm would move back in front by four, 66-62, with 2:48 left. The Greyhounds finished with four double-figure scorers led by Bluford (16 points), Foti (15 points), Diethorn (13 points) and Twomey (13 points). Shea finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and six assists.
NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Urban has a 3.81 cumulative GPA as a math/education major, while Lupien has a 3.89 cumulative GPA as a biology major. Both women earned perfect 4.00 grade point averages this past fall semester, while Foti earned a Director's Citation for a GPA over 3.5 for the sixth time in his seven semesters. Urban is now seven-for seven and Lupien three-for-three in earning spots on the department's Student Athlete Honor Roll. This is Foti's second-straight appearance on the conference elite list, while Urban was named to the third-team last year. This is Lupien's first time on the list. OTHER FALL/WINTER SPORT
HOUNDS PREVIOUSLY NAMED: MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH: Serge DEBARI
(Assumption '71) NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: junior guard/forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) averaged 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a 2-0 week. He scored 18 points (five-for-seven field goals, six-for-seven free throws) with six rebounds and three assists in a win over Franklin Pierce. He had seven points, 11 rebounds and six assists vs. Saint Anselm. Sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) averaged 15.0 points and 2.5 assists in a 2-0 week. He had 14 points and four assists against Franklin Pierce and scored 16 points (five-for-10 field goals, four-for-four free throws) in a road win at Saint Anselm. GREYHOUNDS NOTES: the 16-5 start is the best for the Hounds since they were 16-6 to open the 2003-04 season . . . the Hounds are also getting close to being the first Division II school in New England with 1,000 wins in both basketball and baseball (886-870-14, since 1912) . . . Coach SERGE DEBARI, who won his 300th game as a collegiate coach (at both Babson and Assumption) last year, is now nearing another milestone, his 100th win as Greyhound mentor . . . entering Wednesday's game with American International he has 94 wins on the AC bench. Franklin Pierce was 20th, Stonehill 23rd while Southern Connecticut and Bentley both received votes. Post in men's lacrosse on Sunday, February 24 at 1 p.m. (wear mittens!) * ECAC FOOTBALL ALL-STARS: senior defensive end JARED KELLY and senior offensive tackle MATT CERINS both earned first-team status, while freshman running back HERBERT WOODWARD was named the Rookie of-the-Year. Woodward rushed 179 times for 966 yards and 10 touchdowns and was also named the co-Freshman-of-the-Year in the Northeast-10 Conference. Both Cerins and Kelly earned first-team Northeast-10 Conference honors as well. * FOOTBALL GAZETTE ALL-STARS: senior defensive end JARED KELLY (SECOND TEAM) and sophomore linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) (THIRD TEAM) both earned selection * HALL OF FAMER HENRI BELANGER PASSES: a .331 lifetime hitter, Herni Belanger '35 and one the region's outstanding two-way catchers for the Hounds from 1929-35 passed away December 14, 2007 in Sarasota, Florida. He is one of a very small minority to have played collegiate ball for two Hall of Famers at the same time. JESSE BURKETT, the baseball Hall of Famer was the head coach (1931-32) and his assistant coach was RUBE MARQUARD, the former New York Giants pitcher who once won a Major League record 19 straight games. Belanger also played for Coaches JIM TUNNEY (1929-30), ART GELINAS (1933-34) and GENE RHEAULT '34 (1935). He enjoyed his finest year in 1931 batting .452 and leading the team in hits, runs, total bases, and runs batted in. He made just three errors in handling over 120 chances. He led the team again in 1932 (.282) and then batted .357 in 1933. The Nashua, NH native (born in 1913) entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on the staff of Admiral Kent Hewitt in the planning and executiion of the invasion of North Africa and Sicily and aboard the U.S.S. Missouri remaining as Hewitt's Flag Secretary in London after World War II. He served during the Korean War and on the Joint Chiefs staff in Washington, DC working on the formation of NATO. He completed tours as intelligence officer on the staff of Naval District New Orleans and the Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei from 1958-61 during the Taiwan straits crises. In June 1965 he retired as a Commander and started a second career in education. He completed a Masters Degree program at Salem, MA State College and later taught at Malden, MA High School. Involved in Franco-American cultural activities, he was appointed as the state's French Cultural Commissioner in November 1971 by Governor Frank Sargent. * The first women's basketball/volleyball coach at the College, RUTH LINDEN, passed away Christmas Day 2007. Linden was also the first female winner of the Al Banx Memorial Award for service to the department (1975). * former basketball standout JIM BOYLAN, who played two years for the Greyhounds (1973-75) was named the interim head coach of the Chicago Bulls replacing the fired Scott Skiles . . . the 52-year-old Boylan also has been an assistant coach in Cleveland (1993-97), Vancouver (1997-2000), Phoenix with Skiles (2000-01) and Atlanta (2003-04) previously. He also coached in the Continental Basketball Association and in college, including stops at Michigan State as an aide under Jud Heathcote (1986-89) and head coach at New Hampshire (1989-92) * Greyhound football Hall of Famer BRIAN KELLY '83 was named the Big East Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Bearcats to a 9-3 overall record and subsequent 31-21 win over Southern Mississippi in the Papa John Bowl game (December 22) * Former Hound
baseball player SEAN WALSH '07 was a contestant (and winning almost $6,000)
