February 6, 2008, Number 20 Hounds
BASKETBALL teams now 35-11, both headed to The Greyhounds, ranked No. 4 in the N.C.A.A. Northeast Division II poll improved to 18-5 overall and 12-4 in the conference with their 11th win in their last 13 outings. They are tied with Franklin Pierce University for second place in the standings one half game behind league-leader Stonehill College (12-3).
GREYHOUNDS HOOP WINNINGIEST IN NORTHEAST-10 The Greyhounds led 36-32 at the halftime break outscoring the Penmen 15-2 over the last 4:52. Junior guard Alyssa Whitney hit a straightaway jumper on a feed from junior guard Stephanie Houghton to give Southern New Hampshire a 30-21 lead with 4:52 left in the half. The Hounds came exploded offensively as senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) started the streak with a drive to the basket, followed by a junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) lane jumper, two free throws by freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) and another layin by Czarnecki. Plasski then drilled a long three-pointer from the left wing to give the Greyhounds the lead at 32-30 and freshman forward PAM MOBLEY (Worcester, MA/Doherty) converted a Griffiths' pass on a nifty inside move before Czarnecki socred again inside off another Griffiths' feed. Southern New Hampshire broke the skein with a pair of free throws by freshman forward Megan Smith with 16 seconds left. A free throw by senior
forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) with 7:19
left in the second half ushered the Greyhounds to their largest lead of the
game, 12 points, at 56-44. The Penmen then outscored the Greyhounds 16-3 and
took the lead, 60-59, on a layup by senior forward Heather Marino with 40 seconds
remaining. Gardner hit the game-winner 13 seconds later on the left wing on

Leads Men past S.N.H.U., 76-70 The Greyhounds ranked No. 2 in the N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast poll behind only undefeated Bentley College improved their record to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in the conference in sole possession of third-place (the top four teams will draw first-round byes and host second-round games in the upcoming conference postseason tournament). They are now 1,007-822 since the program's inception as the winningest New England Division II program of all time. Saint Michael's College, which won its 1,000th game earlier in the season is now 1,004-936. The Greyhounds are also three wins away from their 13th 20-win season and first since 2002-03 (20-11). Bluford led three double-figure scorers for the Greyhounds as senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) (14 points) and freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) (11 points) played well in support roles. Sophomore forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Wellesley, MA/Newton North/Taft School) was a defensive force off-the-bench with a career-best four blocked shots in an 11-minute stint. The Greyhounds bolted to 38-32 halftime lead as Bluford paved the way with nine points on three-for-four accuracy from the floor. With the scored tied following a Malafaia inside move off a feed from freshman forward DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) the Greyhounds outscored the Penmen 13-7 over the final 4:10 of the half. SNHU junior guard Gerald Carter converted two free throws to put the Penman back in front however Bluford countered a with a top-of-the-circle three pointer to make it 28-27 Greyhounds. The Penmen took their final lead of the half, 29-28, as junior guard Troy Brown scored inside. Malaifaia converted an offensive rebound and senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin) hit back-to-back three-pointers from the left wing as the Greyhounds led by seven, 36-29. The Penmen stopped the run as freshman guard Chase Miller hit a three-pointer and Foti finished the scoring in the half with a layin with 37 seconds left. Southern New Hampshire would tie the game (48-48, 53-53, 55-55 and 58 58) four times in the second half however never forged ahead. The Greyhounds responded each time: Bluford hit a long three-pointer to make it 51-48, Baldarelli scored inside to make 55-53 and hit a three-pointer to make it 58-55. Junior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) hit a corner three pointer to make it 61-58.
NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS Urban has a 3.81 cumulative GPA as a math/education major, while Lupien has a 3.89 cumulative GPA as a biology major. Both women earned perfect 4.00 grade point averages this past fall semester, while Foti earned a Director's Citation for a GPA over 3.5 for the sixth time in his seven semesters. Urban is now seven-for seven and Lupien three-for-three in earning spots on the department's Student Athlete Honor Roll. This is Foti's second-straight appearance on the conference elite list, while Urban was named to the third-team last year. This is Lupien's first time on the list. OTHER FALL/WINTER SPORT

Coach SERGE DEBARI, who won his 300th game as a collegiate coach (at both Babson and Assumption) last year, is now nearing another milestone, his 100th win as Greyhound mentor . . . he now has 95 wins on the AC bench. (Providence '83) USA TODAY/ESPN, NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL POLL: through January 22: Greyhounds were ranked No. 22 in the nation, one of three teams in the Northeast-10 Conference in the poll. Franklin Pierce was 20th, Stonehill 23rd while Southern Connecticut and Bentley both received votes. NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) averaged 12.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals while shooting 52.4 percent (11-for-21 field goals) in a 2-0 week. She had nine points (four-for-nine field goals), 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals in a victory over American International and scored 16 points (seven-for-12 field goals) with nine rebounds and three steals in a road win at Southern New Hampshire. Freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) averaged 12.0 points and 2.0 assists. She scored 18 points, including six in the final 1:35 in a win over American International. THOMAS MANNING '69 TO BE HONORED: ex-football player for the Greyhounds and a member of the College's Board of Trustees will be honored SATURDAY (February 9) at the annual Central Massachusetts Heart Ball at Union Station, Worcester, MA. He will be the recipient of the prestigious "Heart of Gold Award." Annually, the Central Massachusetts Division of the American Heart Association honors an individual "who best represents and embodies the core values of their mission . . . building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke . . . through education and awareness in the Central Massachusetts community." Manning is the Deputy Chancellor (Commonwealth Medicine) of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. * WOMEN THINK PINK: the women's basketball program at Assumption College and members of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (all divisions) will be involved in a unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began THINK PINK in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. The THINK PINK week is scheduled for February 8-17 . . . the Greyhounds are scheduled to host Merrimack College (Wednesday, February 13) and Stonehill College (Saturday, February 16). They will distribute pink wrist bands and t-shirts to students (with a donation). Greyhound women's players have worn pink shoe laces all year, while game officials have used pink whistles. * GREYHOUNDS WILL BE FIRST: the Greyhounds could be the first local college to play a spring sport HOME contest when they host L.I.U.-C.W. Post in men's lacrosse on Sunday, February 24 at 1 p.m. (wear mittens!). * BASEBALL OPENS IN 23 DAYS: the Greyhounds' baseball team will kick off its 2008 season with a twi-night doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State, MI at Terry Park, Ft. Myers, Florida on Saturday, March 1 beginning at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the softball team opens the following day in Ocoee, Florida with games against Lake Superior State, MI and Grand Valley State, MI at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively. Women's lacrosse plays Susquehanna, PA in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 5 at 10 a.m. and men's golf opens in the Fairfield University Invitational at Crown Park G.C. in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 7-8. * HALL OF FAMER HENRI BELANGER PASSES: a .331 lifetime hitter, Henri Belanger '35 and one the region's outstanding two-way catchers for the Hounds in the early 30s passed away December 14, 2007 in Sarasota, Florida. He is one of a very small minority to have played collegiate ball for two Hall of Famers at the same time. JESSE BURKETT, the baseball Hall of Famer was the head coach (1931-32) and his assistant coach was another Hall of Famer, RUBE MARQUARD, the former New York Giants pitcher, who once won a Major League record 19 straight games. Belanger also played for Coaches JIM TUNNEY (1929-30), ART GELINAS (1933-34) and GENE RHEAULT '34 (1935). He enjoyed his finest year in 1931 batting .452 and leading the team in hits, runs, total bases, and runs batted in. He made just three errors in handling over 120 chances. He led the team again in 1932 (.282) and then batted .357 in 1933. The Nashua, NH native (born in 1913) entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on the staff of Admiral Kent Hewitt in the planning and executiion of the invasion of North Africa and Sicily and aboard the U.S.S. Missouri remaining as Hewitt's Flag Secretary in London after World War II. He served during the Korean War and on the Joint Chiefs staff in Washington, DC working on the formation of NATO. He completed tours as intelligence officer on the staff of Naval District New Orleans and the Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei from 1958-61 during the Taiwan straits crises. In June 1965 he retired as a Commander and started a second career in education. He completed a Masters Degree program at Salem, MA State College and later taught at Malden, MA High School. Involved in Franco-American cultural activities, he was appointed as the state's French Cultural Commissioner in November 1971 by Governor Frank Sargent. * The first women's basketball/volleyball coach at the College, RUTH LINDEN, passed away Christmas Day 2007. Linden was also the first female winner of the Al Banx Memorial Award for service to the department (1975). * Former basketball standout JIM BOYLAN, who played two years for the Greyhounds (1973-75) was named the interim head coach of the Chicago Bulls replacing the fired Scott Skiles . . . the 52-year-old Boylan also has been an assistant coach in Cleveland (1993-97), Vancouver (1997-2000), Phoenix with Skiles (2000-01) and Atlanta (2003-04) previously. player MARTHA CURLEY (KINBACK) '77 will be inducted into the Shrewsbury
High School Athletics Hall of Fame in October. She played for the Greyhounds
in 1973-74.
