BASKETBALL teams now 39-13, both headed to Twomey, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, rallied the Greyhounds from a 28-25 halftime deficit to improve their record to 19-7 overall and 13-6 in the conference (third place) with three games to play. They are now in prime position to annex their 13th 20-win season and first since 2002-03. The Skyhawks moved to a 28-25 halftime advantage led by forward A.J. Rudowitz with 11 points. A dunk by senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) (11 first-half points) on a lob from junior guard PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) put the Greyhounds in front 23-22 with 5:10 remaining however Stonehill would outscore the Hounds 6-2 to close out the half ahead by three points. Guard Mike Kernan hit a jumper to put Stonehill in front and guard Matt Hall hit a lane jumper to make it a three-point game, 26-23. Twomey scored on a fastbreak on an assist from sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and the Skyhawks' Rudowitz finished with an inside move. The teams traded baskets for most of the second half until a long three-pointer by freshman forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) tied the game 53-53 with 7:18 left. With 37 seconds left Rudowitz put Stonehill back in front 62-61 making both ends of a two-shot foul situation before Twomey's heroics 15 seconds later put the Hounds in front to stay. Guard Randell Stallworth missed an open corner three-pointer with four seconds left and junior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) corralled the rebound and made a free throw with a second left to account for the final. The Greyhounds outrebounded
Stonehill 37-28 with 13 coming on the offensive glass. Diethorn led the Greyhounds
with 19 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Twomey finished
15 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots and Bajema had 11 points and a
game-high eight rebounds. Diethorn now has 1,043 points, while Twomey inched
closer to 1,000-points with 968. NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS Urban has a 3.81 cumulative GPA as a math/education major, while Lupien has a 3.89 cumulative GPA as a biology major. Both women earned perfect 4.00 grade point averages this past fall semester, while Foti earned a Director's Citation for a GPA over 3.5 for the sixth time in his seven semesters. Urban is now seven-for seven and Lupien three-for-three in earning spots on the department's Student Athlete Honor Roll. This is Foti's second-straight appearance on the conference elite list, while Urban was named to the third-team last year. This is Lupien's first time on the list. OTHER FALL/WINTER SPORT
HOUNDS PREVIOUSLY NAMED: MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH: Serge DEBARI
(Assumption '71) NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: senior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in a 2-0 week. He had 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots in a victory over Merrimack and followed with 19 points six rebounds and three blocked shots in a win over Stonehill. Senior forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists and shot 54.5 percent (12-for-22 field goals). He had 13 points (six for-11 field goals), eight rebounds and two assists against Merrimack and scored 15 points, including the game-winning basket with 22 seconds left, with six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots against Stonehill. GREYHOUNDS NOTES: the 19-7 start is the best for the Hounds since they were 16-6 to open the 2003-04 season . . . the Hounds are also getting close to being the first Division II school in New England with 1,000 wins in both basketball and baseball (886-870-14, since 1912) . . . Coach SERGE DEBARI, who won his 300th game as a collegiate coach (at both Babson and Assumption) last year, is now nearing another milestone, his 100th win as Greyhound mentor . . . he now has 95 wins on the AC bench. (Providence '83) NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFTHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) averaged 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. She had a double-double 18 points (six-for-10 field goals) and 12 rebounds against Merrimack. NORTHEAST-10 WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) averaged 9.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots. She had seven points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two steals against Merrimack and had a double-double 12 points, 12 rebounds versus Stonehill. Junior guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) averaged 18.0 points and reached the 1,000-point mark in her career this past week. NINE DAYS: the Greyhounds baseball team will kick off its 2008 season with
a twi-night doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State, MI at Terry Park, Ft.
Myers, Florida on Saturday, March 1 beginning at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the softball
team opens the following day in Ocoee, Florida with games against Lake Superior
State, MI and Grand Valley State, MI at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively. Women's lacrosse
plays Susquehanna, PA in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 5 at 10 a.m. and men's
golf opens in the Fairfield University Invitational at Crown Park G.C. in Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina on March 7-8.
