TWOMEY leads men past No. 25 Merrimack in OT; WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) converted two free throws with two seconds left and scored a season-high 25 points leading Assumption College past 25th-ranked and previously undefeated Merrimack College, 92-91, in an overtime men's basketball thriller Thursday. The Greyhounds, now 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference, also received superb performances from senior center COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) (20 points, career-high 18 rebounds, 2 blocks) and junior forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) (11 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks). Assumption owned an impressive 58-43 advantage on the boards including a season-high 21 offensive rebounds. Guard Darren Duncan led the Warriors, now 6-1, 3-1, with a career-high 33 points---including an amazing 25 points in the second half, while guard Darin Mency chipped in with 24 points. The Greyhounds trailed, 39-36, at the half despite leading for most of the period. They moved to a 14-7 early lead . . . a jumper by Twomey, a long three pointer by senior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), a inside move by Twomey, a three-pointer from the top of the circle by sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti), a layin by Bluford and finally a tipin by Diethorn detailed the Hounds' spurt. Mency had a spin move layin and two free throws and Duncan a three-pointer to account for the Merrimack offense. A three-pointer by Duncan tied the game at 31-31 with 3:48 left. Shea theen hit a corner three-pointer on a feed from Foti and Foti converted inside on the fastbreak for a five-point Hound's lead, 36-31, with 2:10 left. Guard Micky Burtnyk connected on a jumper in the paint and then a three pointer to tie the game once again at 36-36 with 1:06 left. His three-point heave at the buzzer gave the Warriors a three-point lead at the break. Merrimack led for most the second half and when Olatungie Lightfoot-Taylor converted two free throws with 5:30 left they had their largest lead, 70-65. Twomey answered with a lane jumper before Duncan made one of a two shot foul situation for the Warriors. Twomey then made two free throws and Foti canned a wing jumper to tie it once again at 71-71. The teams played even through the end of regulation with Twomey's layin with 30 seconds left tying it at 78-78. The Warriors Mency (16 seconds left) and Shea (at the buzzer) both missed three pointers as time expired. Merrimack took an early 85-82 lead in the overtime but the Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run to take command. Bluford and Diethorn converted layups to give the Greyhounds their first lead in the extra session, 86-85. Shea then made the second half of a one-and-one and then buried a long three-pointer on a feed from Twomey for a five-point lead (90-85) with 56 seconds left. Duncan converted a three-pointer at the other end before Twomey finished matters with two free throws with two seconds left. Mency hit a then-meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final. Bethany
Plasski leads women's hoop past Merrimack The Greyhounds, who received votes in the USAToday/ESPN/WBCA national poll this past week are now 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The Greyhounds received 18 votes which would have them at No. 35. Playing well in support roles for the Greyhounds were sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points), senior center MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) (11 points, 3 blocks), and freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) (10 points). Senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) finished with seven points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. She now has 923 rebounds in her bid to become the fourth to join the 1,000-rebound club. The Greyhounds sped to a 39-27 halftime advantage as their stingy defense limited the usually sharpshooting Warriors to just 29 percent, making merely nine of 31 shots from the floor. Parker led the individual scoring with all 12 of her points. Guard Amanda Shannon converted the second of two free throws with 11:11 left to cut the Assumption early lead to 13-10. The Greyhounds then spurted 10-4 to assume control, 23-14. Griffiths started the rally with a wing jumper before Merrimack guard Gately Golden scored on a layin. The Hounds' Parker and Plasski each hit both ends of two-shot foul opportunities for a 19-12 lead. Merrimack guard Tayeya Faison made jumper in the paint before the Hounds' senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) and Urban countered with inside moves for a 23-14 advantage. guard Sarah Benischek hit a pair of free throws with 7:58 left in the second
half as the Warriors cut the gap to three, 53-50 completing a 23-14 run after
the break. Assumption however outscored Merrimack 19-9 to win going away. COACH:

CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: COREY DIETHORN (Sr., C, Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley): averaged a double-double (14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds) and 3.0 blocks. Had eight points, five rebounds and four blocks at Stonehill and scored 20 points (nine-for-15 field goals) with 18 rebounds (13 defensive) in an overtime win at Merrimack. PATRICK SHEA (Jr., F, Salem, MA/Salem): averaged a double-double (11.5 points, 10.0 rebounds) and 6.0 assists. Scored 12 points (five-for-nine field goals) with eight rebounds and three assists at Stonehill. In an overtime victory at Merrimack, he scored 11 points (six in the overtime period) with 12 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks. GREYHOUNDS NEARING 1,000 WINS: the 6-3 start is the best for the Hounds since they were 6-0 to open the 2003-04 season . . . the team has now posted an overall mark of 996-816 since the beginning of verified records in 1923 24 . . . it is known that the team played in both of the years preceding that however records are scarce . . . the Hounds are also getting close to being the first Division II school in New England with 1,000 wins in both basketball and baseball (886-870 14, since 1912). Former football return standout SETH LOPES '04 has been elected to the Attleboro Area Hall of Fame. Lopes still holds most of the Greyhounds kickoff return records after a standout career at North Attleboro High. |
