TWOMEY leads men past No. 25 Merrimack in OT;
Beth PLASSKI leads women past Merrimack, 72-59
WORCESTER,
Mass. --- Senior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable)
converted two free throws with two seconds left and scored a season-high 25
points leading Assumption College past 25th-ranked and previously undefeated
Merrimack College, 92-91, in an overtime men's basketball thriller Thursday.
The Greyhounds,
now 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference, also received superb performances
from senior center COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley) (20 points,
career-high 18 rebounds, 2 blocks) and junior forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem,
MA/Salem) (11 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks). Assumption owned an
impressive 58-43 advantage on the boards including a season-high 21 offensive
rebounds.
Guard Darren
Duncan led the Warriors, now 6-1, 3-1, with a career-high 33 points---including
an amazing 25 points in the second half, while guard Darin Mency chipped in
with 24 points.
The Greyhounds
trailed, 39-36, at the half despite leading for most of the period. They moved
to a 14-7 early lead . . . a jumper by Twomey, a long three pointer by senior
forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), a inside move by Twomey, a
three-pointer from the top of the circle by sophomore guard COURTLAND BLUFORD
(Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti), a layin by Bluford and finally a
tipin by Diethorn detailed the Hounds' spurt. Mency had a spin move layin and
two free throws and Duncan a three-pointer to account for the Merrimack offense.
A three-pointer
by Duncan tied the game at 31-31 with 3:48 left. Shea theen hit a corner three-pointer
on a feed from Foti and Foti converted inside on the fastbreak for a five-point
Hound's lead, 36-31, with 2:10 left.
Guard Micky
Burtnyk connected on a jumper in the paint and then a three pointer to tie the
game once again at 36-36 with 1:06 left. His three-point heave at the buzzer
gave the Warriors a three-point lead at the break. Merrimack led for most the
second half and when Olatungie Lightfoot-Taylor converted two free throws with
5:30 left they had their largest lead, 70-65.
Twomey answered
with a lane jumper before Duncan made one of a two shot foul situation for the
Warriors. Twomey then made two free throws and Foti canned a wing jumper to
tie it once again at 71-71. The teams played even through the end of regulation
with Twomey's layin with 30 seconds left tying it at 78-78. The Warriors Mency
(16 seconds left) and Shea (at the buzzer) both missed three pointers as time
expired.
Merrimack
took an early 85-82 lead in the overtime but the Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run
to take command. Bluford and Diethorn converted layups to give the Greyhounds
their first lead in the extra session, 86-85. Shea then made the second half
of a one-and-one and then buried a long three-pointer on a feed from Twomey
for a five-point lead (90-85) with 56 seconds left.
Duncan converted
a three-pointer at the other end before Twomey finished matters with two free
throws with two seconds left. Mency hit a then-meaningless three-pointer at
the buzzer to account for the final.
Bethany
Plasski leads women's hoop past Merrimack
Junior guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) scored 18 points
to lead four double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Merrimack
College, 72-59, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action Thursday.
The Greyhounds,
who received votes in the USAToday/ESPN/WBCA national poll this past week are
now 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The Greyhounds received 18
votes which would have them at No. 35.

in support roles for the Greyhounds were sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER
(Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points), senior center MEGAN URBAN (Portland,
ME/Deering) (11 points, 3 blocks), and freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS
(Walpole, MA/Ursuline) (10 points). Senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD
(Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) finished with seven points and a team-leading
10 rebounds. She now has 923 rebounds in her bid to become the fourth to join
the 1,000-rebound club.
The Greyhounds
sped to a 39-27 halftime advantage as their stingy defense limited the usually
sharpshooting Warriors to just 29 percent, making merely nine of 31 shots from
the floor. Parker led the individual scoring with all 12 of her points.
Guard Amanda
Shannon converted the second of two free throws with 11:11 left to cut the Assumption
early lead to 13-10. The Greyhounds then spurted 10-4 to assume control, 23-14.
Griffiths started the rally with a wing jumper before Merrimack guard Gately
Golden scored on a layin. The Hounds' Parker and Plasski each hit both ends
of two-shot foul opportunities for a 19-12 lead.
Merrimack
guard Tayeya Faison made jumper in the paint before the Hounds' senior forward
SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) and Urban countered with inside
moves for a 23-14 advantage.
Merrimack
guard Sarah Benischek hit a pair of free throws with 7:58 left in the second
half as the Warriors cut the gap to three, 53-50 completing a 23-14 run after
