ASSUMPTION 32, SACRED HEART 14 (last win over Sacred Heart)
(Saturday, September 4, 1999)
Freshman running back KEVIN CLIVE (Orchard Park, NY) rushed 28 times for 210
yards and tied the school-record with five touchdowns as Assumption College
defeated Division I Sacred Heart University, 32-14, at Rocheleau Field.
Clive tied the school mark co-held by former Hound all-America FRAN DE FALCO,
who scored five touchdowns vs. Massachusetts Lowell (11-6-93). His 210 yards
represents the fourth-best effort in Hound history.
The Hounds moved to a 19-7 lead at the hjalf as Clive scored three first half
touchdowns. His 10-yard scamper off right tackle at 9:25 of the first period
capped a nine-play, 55-yard drive . . . a march keyed by a junior quarterback
CHAD CHARGES (North Attleboro, MA) to senior wide out JASON CALLA (Winthrop,
MA) 11 yard pass, a 14-yard keeper by Carges and an 18-yard rambled by Clive.
The Pioneers took the ensuing kickoff and drove 48 yards in 14 plays . . .
1 44-yard return by VICTOR BENSON (Hyde Park, MA) set up the drive. KIHEME COWAN
(Woodbridge, NJ), who rushed for 143 yards to lead the Pioneer offense, rambled
six times for 33 yards in the march. He also caught a STEVE LADD (Newburyport,
MA) pass for 11 yards. TIM REDICAN (Meriden, CT) kicked the conversion for a
7-7 tie.
The Hounds took the lead for keeps as freshman linebacker JOE PANNULLO (Orchard
Park, NY) picked off a Ladd aerial. The Hounds scored three plays later on a
Carges-to-Clive 30-yard pass plays on the first play of the second period.
The third TD came following the first of two fumble recoveries by freshman
defensive end SEAN HAGERTY (Worcester, MA/Holy Name). The Hounds drove 89 yards
in 11 plays capped by a Clive eight-yard touchdown run. Clive scored on a 26-yard
pass from Carges in the third period and on a 24-yard run . . . eclipsing the
200-yard barrier in the fourth period. He might have scored six but fumbled
on the one yard line later in the period.
Defensively, the Hounds were led by sophomore linebackers PETE LEONARD (Worcester,
MA/St. Peter-Marian) (13 tackles, 1/2 sack) and CORY CLIVE (Orchard Park, NY)
. . . brother of Kevin . . (10 tackles,1 break-up).
