Jon Breuer scored the game-winner on a one-yard plunge in the first overtime
as the Hounds beat Saint Anselm, 13-7, at Grappone Stadium. Running back Austin
Davis rushed 28 times for 186 yards (6.6 average), threw a 10-yard scoring pass
and punted three times for a 40.6 average.
The game was scoreless through the
first 53 minutes as the teams traded punts (23) and quarterback sacks (16) in
a defensive struggle. Senior/captain linebacker Mike Pruell (Walpole,
MA) led the Greyhounds with 6-3--9 tackles with 1.5 sacks and a pass pressure.
Junior linebacker Thomas Kelleher was superb for the Hawks with 7-7--14 tackles,
1.5 sacks, 1 pressure, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.
It would prove to be the first overtime
win for the Greyhounds since September 12, 1981 (21-14 over Bentley College)
and the same two teams played a 20-20 tie on September 11, 1982. The overtime
game was the first since the program turned varsity in 1988.
The Greyhounds stopped Saint Anselm
on the first overtime series as junior Michael Garcarz missed a 47-yard field
goal wide left. The Greyhounds got a key pass pressure from junior free safety
PETER MILLIGAN (Melrose, MA/Melrose) followed by a sack shared
by senior tackle MATT CURRAN (Westminster, MA/Oakmont) and senior/captain
strong safety GINO MECCARIELLO (Southington, CT/Southington) to
stymie the drive.
On the Hounds overtime possession
series Davis rushed consecutively for nine, 13 and two yards giving the Hounds
a first-and-goal at the one. Breuer scored on the next play for the win.
Assumption College opened the scoring
with 6:22 left in the game as wide receiver Anthony Davy caught a 10-yard option
pass from Davis to cap an eight play, 44-yard drive. The series was set up following
a Milligan interception and 25 yard return to the Hawks' 44. A 21-yard reception
to the 12 from Breuer to sophomore tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Bedford,
NH/Manchester West) was the key play in the march. Junior MIKE TOBIN
(Woburn, MA/Woburn) kicked to conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Saint Anselm tied the score driving
74 yards in nine plays and scoring with 1:56 remaining. Senior quarterback Shane
Dinagen found junior wide out Pat Turner on a 22-yard pass to the Hounds' 35
on a fourth-and-nine play. Sophomore corner MATT KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian)
made the touchdown saving tackle. Dinagen then found senior wide out Kevin Lukas
for six yards and then connected with senior tailback Mike Donahue on a 29-yard
touchdown pass. Garcarz' conversion tied the game at 7-7.
The teams traded interceptions on
their final regulation drives with Saint Anselm's junior corner Mark Wysocki
picking Breuer at the Hawks 17, while Meccariello intercepted Dinagen and returned
it 28 yards to the Hawks 43 (touchdown saving tackle by junior tackle Robert
Flynn.
LAST YEAR'S GAME NOTES: the
48 attempts by the Hawks' SHANE DINAGEN (Harrisville, RI/Burrillville)

is merely the sixth opponent to catch 10 or more passes in a game against the
Greyhounds (10 receptions for 90 yards) . . . junior free safety PETER
