College Weekly Sports Note Book WORCESTER, Mass. --- Nicholls State University, the defending Division 1AA Southland Conference champion, rolled up 521 yards of total offense en route to a 44-0 win over Assumption College (now 3-6) Saturday in Thibodaux, LA before a Family Day crowd of 3,814. The Colonels, who have struggled to score this season and were blanked by Northwestern State (9-0) last week, moved to a 24-0 halftime advantage. Nine different players rushed 60 times for 385 yards with running back Dwayne Jones scoring two touchdowns on runs of two and five yards. Placekicker Alex Romero added three field goals and quarterback Zach Chauvin tossed for a pair of scores and rushed for a team-high 90 yards in his first varsity start. (continued below)
MELVIN MC KEE NAMED MEN'S LACROSSE ASSISTANT Melvin McKee of Ashland, MA, longtime successful high school head coach at Marian High School (Framingham, MA) (2006) and Ashland High School (1997 2005) has been named an assistant men's lacrosse coach at the College. The announcement was made jointly by Ted Paulauskas, Director of Athletics and Mark Kelley, Head Men's Lacrosse Coach. McKee posted a 79-67 overall record at Ashland High in its first years of existence. He led the team to four Eastern Massachusetts tournament appearances in eight varsity seasons including the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 tournament in 2000. He was named the Boston Globe Eastern Mass. Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year and the Metro Central Coach-of-the-Year in 2000. He is also the founder of the Ashland Youth Lacrosse program and its coach. He is a member of the Eastern Mass. Lacrosse Coaching Association (1997-06) and US Lacrosse (since 1999). He played as a starting midfielder at Framingham North High and captained the squad in 1971 as a senior. He was a midfielder on the Brine Lacrosse Club and a member of the team that played inthe Club Lacrosse National Championship in 1975 and 1976. He still competes in the Yankee Lacrosse Men's League (Franklin, MA) and the New England Lacrosse League (for 30+ and 40+). He also played for the grand master team, the Paladin Lacrosse Club, from 1999-2006. He was graduated from Northeastern University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and received his Masters (also in Business Administration) in 1984. He studies at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking (1985-87) at the University of Delaware. For the Greyhounds junior wide receiver JAKE BEERS (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), the leading receiver in the Northeast-10 Conference in both receptions (44) and yardage (576 yards), became the third player in Assumption College history with 100 career receptions. With his five receptions against Nicholls, he now has 101 catches in his career for 1,182 yards. He has also moved into third place on the season list with his 44 catches---only Eric Mauer (1997-00), who caught 50 in both 1998 and 2000 and Billy DeMalia (2000-01), who caught 45 in 2001 have had more. His 576 yards receiving this season is the ninth best in Hounds history. The Colonels moved in quickly for the first score. A wind-hindered 26-yard punt and subsequent 49-yard run by Chauvin on first down set Nicholls up at the Greyhounds eight. The saving tackle by Hounds freshman middle linebacker DUSTIN ZITZMANN (Pinellas Park, FL/Dixie Hollins) only delayed the score as Jones rushed three times, the last for two yards, and the touchdown. Romero kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead. The Greyhounds had their best chance midway through the first period as a jarring hit by junior cornerback MATT KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) caused a fumble on a punt. His recovery gave the Hounds a first down at the Nicholls State 45. Freshman quarterback MARSHALL THARPE (Irvine, CA/Santa Magarita), who struggled at 9-for-22 for 53 yards, found junior tight end JAKE LONGENECKER (Fernandina, FL/Manchester, NH West) for 22 yards down-the middle to the Colonels 10. A field goal by senior MIKE TOBIN (Woburn, MA/Woburn) was blocked. Nicholls moved to a 10-0 advantage with 10:25 left in the second period as Romero converted a 24-yard field goal capping a 14-play, 54-yard drive following the blocked punt. The Colonels fumbled twice on the drive, recovering both times while fullback Cal Jones was the workhorse with seven carries for 30 yards. They would increase the lead to 17-0 as Jones capped a nine-play, 80-yard march with a five-yard slant off-left tackle. An interception by cornerback Toney Edison set up a 45-yard touchdown strike from Chauvin to wide receiver Michael Okoronkwo to make it 24-0 (with Romero's conversion). The Colonels would drive the second-half kickoff for a Romero 35-yard field goal---a 21-yard run by running back Michael McLendon was the highlight. Chauvin and Okoronkwo hooked up again, this time on a 42-yard scoring play, to make it 34-0, following a partially blocked punt. A fumble recovery set up a 40-yard field goal by Romero and a 20-yard strike from backup quarterback Chris Bunch to wide receiver Patrick Gordon completed the scoring. Nicholls would take three knees in the waning minutes inside the 10. GREYHOUND

JUSSEAUME MEN'S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH:
Serge DEBARI MENS BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS LAST
YEAR: the reviews for the first year in the second Serge DeBari regime were
mixed. The team had four, nearly five, double-figure scorers . . . they outrebounded
their opponents . . . and, they finished strong with two 'monster' wins against
ranked teams down-the-stretch. But, they did lose 20 games, they did shoot just
.434 from the floor and and under .300 from three-point territory for the first
time in Hounds history and they averaged just 67.6 points per game. THE NON-RETURNERS: DeBari will miss the services of forward/center Josh Melucci (Cranston, RI) who averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds and tossed in a career-high 27 in the win over Saint Anselm . . . point guard Justin Dick (Dorchester, MA) who led the Northeast-10 Conference with 129 assists and averaged 5.9 points . . . little used off-guard Akere Boma (Bronx, NY) and forward John Slyman (Bellingham, MA) are also gone. RETURNING NUCLEUS: DeBari will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around that balanced offense of a year ago. Junior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) averaged 11.2 points and led the team with a gawdy .602 percentage from the floor (only four times all season did he go under .500 for a game) . . . he authored 14 games with double-figure points including a 26-point spectacular at Bentley in which he made 13-of-16 from the floor . . . junior guard LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) was the Hounds top perimeter player and averaged 10.3 points while playing over 800 minutes. Byron had 15 double-figure games . . . junior forward/captain GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable), the Hounds resident work-a-holicand 1,700 point producer in high school, averaged 10.1 points, 5.4 rebounds. shot .505 from the floor in his first year back from knee surgery. Twomey had a career-high 26 in a . . . junior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin), who scored over 1,100 points in high school, averaged 9.0 points and led the squad with 29 three-pointers despite playing most of the season with a stress fracture. Foti tossed in 22 in a overtime crusher at New Haven and 22 more in another overtime loss at nationally acclaimed Bryant . . . senior swingman/captain JUSTIN HOTCHKISS (Maynard, MA/Maynard/Cushing Academy) was just plain better than anyone thought and outworked people to 541 minutes, while averaging 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds and leading the league in floor burns. Hotchkiss had 16 points in the win at nationally ranked Mass. Lowell and eight other double-figure efforts. THE SUPPORTING CAST: mention keys to the team and the name of sophomore point guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) comes up often . . . Bajema led his high school team to a pair of state championships and will be counted on to drive the Greyhound's bus and plainly get the ball to the right place like he did in a 91-84 win over Saint Michael's with a season-nest eight assists . . . sophomore guard/forward PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) who at times was a deft passing machine and at other times showed signs of being a premier perimeter shooter, like his 15-point season-high effort at Southern Connecticut . . . senior guard MIKE TAFT (Avon, CT/Avon) can light it up from deep and had his moments last year including 11 points off-the-bench at Pace . . . hyper junior forward ALEX POPP (pronounced Pope) (Winchester, MA/Winchester) specializes in making things happen . . . sophomore forward MAREK KULIG (Brick, NJ/Msgr. Donovan) leads the league in hustle. NEW DOGS: the addition of guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Watertown, CT/Newton, MA North/Taft School) add considerable athleticism to the roster while walk-on MATT KING (Lexington, MA/Lexington/Cushing Academy) shows promise. Bluford is an offensive specialist expected to provide quickness and elevation to the guard tandem, while Malafaia will provide inside muscle and forward depth. THIS YEAR:
DeBari will build his new-look 2006-07 Greyhounds in the same mold of the
many successful Greyhound teams of the past. Expect the Greyhounds to lead the
league in diving on-the-floor and expect the team to play physical and aggressive
defense. The addition of Bluford and Malafaia should help fix part of the missing
ingredients of last year as the team expects to improve its offensive production
by becoming more diverse in its attack. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH:
Kerry PHAYRE WOMENS BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS LAST YEAR: the reviews for last year were mixed to say the least. The team reached the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs but their 11-11 regular-season record was an "underachievement" according to Coach KERRY PHAYRE. The needs were easily seen on the statistics sheet . . . a more prominent guard situation in which the perimeter game improves significantly and someone steps up to run the offense. The team shot just .397 from the floor despite having one of the dominant inside games in the conference and just .257 from three-point territory. Overall the team finished 16-13 with significant wins against nationally ranked Southern Connecticut, Bentley and a sweep of the Assumption College Marriott Classic. A solid win over Franklin Pierce (72-51) to start the playoff run had hopes high, but a disappointing effort at Southern Connecticut (42-71) ended matters in the second round. THE NON-RETURNERS: Phayre will first deal with the lost personnel as two guards, who saw nearly 1,400 minutes of playing time and two back-up forwards are among the missing. Off-guard Kerry Milhaven (Wantagh, NY) finished her career with 934 points and was the second-leading scorer on last year's squad at 8.6 points-per-game and led with 34 three-pointers and .788 free throw accuracy. Guard Kristen DiCalogero (Walpole, MA) averaged 6.8 points with 25 three-pointers, while forwards Amanda Krawiec (3.5 ppg, 3.3 reb) and Suzanne Jackson (East Greenwich, RI) (1.1 ppg, 2.2 reb) provided depth. RETURNING NUCLEUS: Phayre will mold the 2006-07 Greyhounds around the marvelous talents of one of the Northeast-10 Conference's premier players in junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy). Floyd led the team at 11.9 points-per-game and was the conference leader in rebounds (9.7) and floor accuracy (.583), while earning first-team all-star honors. She had eight double-doubles (points, rebounds) and enjoyed a monster game in a win over Saint Anselm with 25 points, 16 rebounds. Junior MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) is the other half of the Greyhound twin-towers and averaged 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds with .516 floor accuracy. Her career-high came in a 23-point effort against Pace in which she made 10-of-13 from the floor. Senior guard/captain JESS PAULSON (Providence, RI/LaSalle) averaged 4.0 points and led the team with 62 assists. Her best effort came in the playoffs with a 15-point game at Franklin Pierce. Sophomore guard BETH PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee), who averaged 7.6 points while adding an air of winning attitude and toughness to the lineup, earned conference all-freshman honors. She had nine double-figure efforts including a season-high 18 points against Franklin Pierce and started 18 of the final 19 games. Another sophomore, point TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) averaged 2.4 points and increased her playing time considerably as the season wore on---starting the final eight games of the season. She had a season high 10 points in a win at LeMoyne and averaged nearly four assists down-the stretch. Senior guard ASHLEY LAMBERT (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (1.9 ppg), junior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) (2.7 ppg, 4.1 reb) and junior swing BRITT BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) (0.7 ppg) provided depth. NEW GREYHOUNDS: Phayre was busy during roster enhancement season adding six new faces to the lineup. Aggressive forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) was named Miss Maine Basketball after averaging 16.3 points and 9.0 rebounds leading her 21-1 team to the state championship. She adds more strength to an already solid inside game . . . off-guard AMANDA SHEEHY (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) is a cerebrate player with ability to add significantly to the perimeter game . . . forward VIKKI EWING (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West), who played for an unbeaten high school conference champion and the 2005 national champion Long Island Renegades (AAU), will add offense to the lineup . . . competitive guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) helped her high school team win the state championship. She now needs to make the transition from forward to guard, but has shown in preseason an ability to get points on the scoreboard . . . athletic guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock), who earned Norwich Bulletin and New london Day all-star honors, will add to the defensive pressure game, while giving Phayre a solid go-to-basket person . . . off guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson), who scored over 1,100 points in high school, will deal with an ACL problem to open the season. THIS YEAR: Phayre will build her new-look 2006-07 Greyhounds in the same mold of her many successful Greyhound teams of the past and therefore expect the Greyhounds to lead the league in physical and aggressive defense. Their dominant inside game should once again play a prominent role however this time around a vastly improved perimeter game makes the Greyhounds extremely dangerous offensively. Overall this team can set its sights high with a return to the N.C.A.A. postseason. MEN'S ICE HOCKEY HEAD COACH: Kevin
