ASSUMPTION COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL is increasing AWARENESS of those winning the battle with CANCER. The Women's Basketball Coaches of America are encouraging everyone to join together in a show of support for all those stricken with cancer. This SATURDAY, members of the Assumption College women's basketball team will be thinking PINK and wearing a PINK T-SHIRT to remind their fans about those fighting a bigger & more important battle with cancer. They are increasing awareness as the cancer death rate decreases . . . and won't rest till it is eradicated from our lives completely

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: junior forward MIKE FOTI (Franklin, MA/Franklin) was voted to the first team. He carries a 3.29 GPA as a Marketing major. Just back in action in the last two weeks after foot surgery, Foti had 19 points to lead the Greyhounds to a 78-75 win at Southern Connecticut Saturday.

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: COREY DIETHORN (Jr., C, Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy): averaged 11 points-per-game, 11 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks. Had 10 points (3-for-6 FG, 4-for-5 FT), 12 rebounds, and a block versus UMass Lowell. Also had 12 points with 10 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in win at Southern Connecticut and GREG TWOMEY (Jr., Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable): averaged 16.5 points-per-game, shooting 69.2 percent from the floor (9-for-13) and making 83.3 percent (15-for-18) from the free throw line. Had 15 points (3-for-5 FG, 9-for-10 FT) and seven rebounds versus UMass Lowell. Scored 18 points (6-for-8 FG, 6-for-8 FT), four rebounds, and three steals in win at Southern Connecticut. Twomey also named to the Worcester Area Honor Roll.

GREYHOUNDS NOTES: the Hounds won four straight in December, their longest win streak since they opened the 2003-04 season with six straight . . . the team has already exceeded last year's seven wins overall and five in the conference . . . Coach SERGE DEBARI '71, now in his 20th year overall in coaching, is 297-236-- getting close to the magic No. 300 . . . the men's basketball program is nearing 1,000 victories as their record stands at 987-793 since 1923 24 . . . no Division II team in New England has approached that figure to date . . . the Hounds own 50+ wins against Merrimack (56-36, since 1951-52), American International (53-45, since 1928-29), Stonehill (51-39, since 1948-49) and Worcester State (50-2, 1950-2000) . . . the Hounds are second in the NE-10 in rebounding (38.4), third in defensive rebounds (25.67) and rebounding margin (3.1). first in blocks (4.06), fourth in steals (8.39).

junior guard LEROY BYRON has now scored 638 points in his career . . . he averages 9.8 points (third on the team) and leads with a .837 free throw percentage (36-43) (14th NE-10) and 30 three pointers . . . he has nine double-figure scoring games so far with 20 at Mercyhurst his season-high with an amazing six three-pointers

junior forward COREY DIETHORN is second on the team at 11.9 points-per-game and averages 8.5 rebounds (5th NE-10), 50 offensive rebounds (4th NE-10), 94 defensive rebounds (5th NE-10), 19 blocks (7th) . . . he has 11 double-figure scoring games with two 20-point efforts . . . 24 points, 10 rebounds in a win over Merrimack and 22 points, 10 rebounds in the win at Saint Anselm . . . he has eight double-figure rebound games . . . and seven double-doubles (including both games last week) . . . he has now scored 570 points with 340 rebounds and 75 blocks in his career

junior forward GREG TWOMEY averages 13.5 points (leads the the team, 23rd in NE-10) . . . he has 13 double-figure scoring games (26 career) . . . his 25 points at Bentley and 21 at Saint Michael's are season-highs . . . season-high 10 rebounds at Saint Anselm . . . second on the team with 50 assists with a season-high seven vs. LeMoyne and leads the team in floor accuracy (.532) making 83-for-156 (14th NE-10) . . . he has made 29 of his last 43 shots from the floor . . . he also shoots .829 from the line (58-for-70) (15th NE-10), averages 5.8 rebounds (19th NE-10) and has 24 steals (all second on the team, 14th NE-10). . . freshman forward RENAN MALAFAIA averages 4.2 points and 3.7 rebounds and shoots .476 from the floor (30-for-63) . . . has 25 blocks (5th NE-10) . . . had a season-high 9 points with 10 rebounds at Rio Piedras . . . he has had three 10-rebound games vs. Adelphi and both game in Puerto Rico (consecutive) . . . had five blocks vs. Pace.

senior guard MIKE TAFT averages 5.9 points with 16 three pointers (16-for-43) . . . he has three double-figure games . . . 18 points (4 threes) vs. Adelphi, 17 points (3 threes) vs. Merrimack and 11 points (3 threes) vs. Rio Piedras.

junior forward MIKE FOTI has now scored 493 points . . . had season-high 19 points (including last five of the game) in the win over S. NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: senior point guard JESS PAULSON (North Providence, RI/LaSalle) was voted to the first-team, while junior forward/center MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) earned third-team honors. Paulson carries a 3.86 GPA as a Biology major with a career in biotechnology in the offing. She averages 7.2 as the Greyhounds starting point guard and is among the conference leaders in assists. Urban had a 3.76 GPA as a Math major (Education concentration) with a career as a teacher/coach in the offing.

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: CHARDE FLOYD (Jr., F, Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy): averaged 13 points-per-game (8-for-14 FG), 9.5 rebounds, two assists and three steals last week. Had double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) with three assists and four steals against Massachusetts Lowell and 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals at Southern Connecticut and BETHANY PLASSKI (So., G, Fall River, MA/Durfee): averaged 17 points and 2.5 assists last week. Scored 20 points (8-for-15 FG, 3-for 3 FT) with three assists against Massachusetts Lowell and 14 points (3 for-4 threes, 5-for-6 FT) with two assists at Southern Connecticut. She was also named to the Worcester Area Honor Roll.

WOMENS HOOP NOTES: head coach Kerry Phayre is now 169 132 in her 11th season with the Greyhounds and coached her 300th game with the team last Wednesday vs. Massachusetts Lowell . . .

junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) averages 11.9 points (second) (17th NE-10) and 8.4 rebounds (first) (4th NE-10), shoots .612 from the floor (74 for-121) (first) (1st NE-10) and has 48 steals (first) (2nd NE-10) . . . she has 823 career points . . . she has a good chance to become merely the FIFTH Greyhound women's player to reach 1,000 points in her junior year following only STACY MATTIOLI (1996-01) (1,791), KATIE KERR (1996-00) (1,530), MEGHAN SULLIVAN (1999-03) (1,468) and JOY BARRY (1989-93) (1,218) . . . Floyd averaged 46.5 steals in her first two seasons however has 48 through 17 games this season . . . her .590 career field goal percentage is second only to Katelyn Dwyer (2000-04) at .594 and she has already raised it eight points from .582 to start the season . . . she has 13 double-figure games to date (46 career) and seven double-figure rebound games (32 career) and six double-doubles (21 career) . . . she has shot .600 or better from the floor in 10 games this season . . . including one stretch in which she shot, 5-7, 5-6, 5-7, 8-10 and 5-5 from November 21 through December 5 . . . that's 28-for-35 = .800

KRISTIN GAUVIN '05, who ran track for the Greyhounds (2002-04) is now a Los Angeles Laker Girl. While at Assumption College, Gauvin majored in Business Management, earning Dean's List honors and graduating cum laude. Drawing upon 17 years of dance experience, she helped establish the College's first dance team. She was a candidate for a Fulbright Scholarship during her senior year. Off-campus, Gauvin was a member of the New England Patriots cheerleading squad, serving as captain during the 2003 season and cheering at the 2004 Super Bowl. During the same season, she was named the team's Cheerleader of the Year, which enabled her to travel to the 2004 Pro Bowl with 24 of the NFL's best cheerleaders. She was voted as the NFL Cheerleader of the Year in voting conducting on the nfl.com website after the 2004 season. She was crowned Miss Massachusetts (2005) and later competed for the Miss America title.

MIKE O'SHEA '59 PASSES: former basketball player MIKE O'SHEA '59, a member of the 1956-57 team (Coached by Andy Laska) that defeated Holy Cross (69-68) passed away Friday, January 19. O'Shea was also member of the College's faculty for over 40 years before retiring this past year.

EIGHT HOUNDS TEAMS POST 3.0 GPA: eight Greyhound teams have posted a 3.0 grade point average as a team as first semester grades are released: women's tennis (3.31), women's cross country (3.27), women's basketball (3.17), women's softball (3.139), men's cross country (3.136), women's lacrosse (3.11), women's rowing (3.07) and men's golf (3.02).

CHRIS BIRD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA: junior goalkeeper CHRIS BIRD has been named to the second-team of the insidelacrosse.com preseason all-America selections recently released. Bird posted a .625 save percentage last season in 14 games (839 minutes) with 225 saves. He was also named one of three tri-captains for the 2007 season.

HOUNDS HALL OF FAMER NAMED AT CINCINNATI: Greyhounds Hall of Famer BRIAN KELLY '83 was introduced Dec. 4 as the new head football coach the University of Cincinnati (the Big East Conference). Kelly, who served as head coach at 1-A Central Michigan previously (2004-06) also coached at Division II Grand Valley State leading the Lakers to a pair of national titles. He was the keynote speaker at the Hounds football gala in August and was also inducted into the Hall of Fame that evening. He was a standout player and later coach for the Hounds. He also coached softball for five years.
