College Weekly Sports Note Book WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Assumption College community has been saddened by the passing of two former student-athlete standouts. DR. PETER AUCOIN '25, age 103, died recently in Rumford, ME. And, AMY ROMANO '88 unexpected passed away Thursday, January 11 at the age of 40. Both were members of the College's Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame. Dr. Aucoin was a graduate of the former Assumption Prep (1921) and received his B.A. in Liberal Studies from Assumption College (1925). He was also a Alumni-Athletics Hall of Famer having excelled in baseball, basketball and hockey at the College. One of the outstanding two-sport student-athletes in the history of women's sports at the College, Romano was a major part of the emergence of two sports to the regional level. As a field hockey midfielder, she was a regional all-star, while as a softball pitcher, she earned all-conference honors. Dr. Aucoin achieved his medical degree from Leval University, Quebec, Canada in 1933. A general practitioner and surgeon, from 1937 to 1979 he was a member of the medical staff at the Rumford, ME Community Hospital. He also served as National President of Assumption College Alumni Association. He endowed the Pierre Aucoin Scholarship for students from Rumford and Mexico, Maine to be able to attain a higher education. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Assumption College in 1964. He was also elected into the Assumption Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970. In 1973, he received the
Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award, in recognition of his devotion to the
college as well as for his distinguished service in his field of medicine. Additionally,
the college awarded him the President's Medal in 1995 and the Centennial Award
in 2004. In 2004, Dr. Aucoin, then age 100, was honored to serve as the Commencement
Speaker centennial class. She twice led the Hounds in scoring from her midfield position for Coach Joyce LaBonte finishing with 15 goals, 3 assists for 33 points in her career. She was a determining factor as the Hounds earned a state tournament bid after the 1987 season. She scored six goals (12 points) in 1985 and had five goals, one assist (11 points) as a senior. In softball she posted a phenomenal 16-7 record erasing the Hounds' record book leading her team to a final 16-10 mark and fourth-place finish in the Northeast 10. The Hounds also played in the first of five post-season tournaments during her career. The team played in the state tournament twice (1985, 87), the E.C.A.C. tournament (1987) and the Northeast-10 playoffs (1986, 87) in her career. She won 40 games in her star-studded career for Coaches Brian Kelly '83 and Kim Hoffman and pitched nearly 500 innings with 52 complete games and a 1.97 ERA. She was named the M.V.P. in both 1985 and 1988. She received her double-major Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Education in May 1988 and her Masters in Reading/Language Art concentration from Eastern Connecticut in 1997. She was a teacher at the Alcorn School since 1995. She was also the field hockey coach at Fermi High in Enfield, CT since 1999. She also served as assistant coach at W. New England (1998), and Enrico Fermi (1996-97). She was the softball coach at Granby, CT High (1990-92) and an assistant at Enfield High (1996). She was inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. MEN'S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH: Serge
DEBARI NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) averaged 18 points and shot .593 from the floor (16-for-27). He scored 18 points against both Bryant (7-for-8 from the floor) and at Saint Michael's (9-for-19 from the floor). He also was named to the Worcester Area Freshman Honor Roll. NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor (16-for-24) and making all seven free throws attempted. He had 18 points (8-for-10 from the floor), six rebounds, and four assists against Bryant and scored 21 points (8-for-14 from the floor) with six rebounds and three assists at Saint Michael's. He also was named to the Worcester Area Honor Roll. GREYHOUNDS NOTES: the Hounds won four straight in December, their longest win streak since they opened the 2003-04 season with six straight . . . the team has already tied last year's seven wins overall and five in the conference . . . Coach SERGE DEBARI '71, now in his 20th year overall in coaching, is 296-235---getting close to the magic No. 300 . . . the Hounds have won the battle of the boards in all but four games this season . . . the men's basketball program is nearing 1,000 victories as their record stands at 986-792 since 1923 24 . . . no Division II team in New England has approached that figure to date . . . the Hounds own 50+ wins against Merrimack (56-36, since 1951-52), American International (53-45, since 1928-29), Stonehill (51-39, since 1948-49) and Worcester State (50-2, 1950-2000) . . . the Hounds are second in the NE-10 in rebounding (39.1), defensive rebounds (26.06) and rebounding margin (3.8). third in blocks (3.94), fifth in steals (8.13). junior guard LEROY BYRON has now scored 620 points in his career . . . he averages 9.9 points (third on the team) and leads with a .892 free throw percentage (33-37) (fourth NE-10) and 27 three pointers . . . he has nine double-figure scoring games so far with 20 at Mercyhurst his season-high with an amazing six three-pointers . . . he has made 27 of his last 29 free throws. junior forward COREY DIETHORN is second on the team at 12.0 points per game and averages 8.1 rebounds (5th NE-10), 45 offensive rebounds (4th NE-10), 77 defensive rebounds (5th NE-10) . . . he has nine double-figure scoring games with two 20-point efforts . . . 24 points, 10 rebounds in a win over Merrimack and 22 points, 10 rebounds in the win at Saint Anselm . . . he has six double-figure rebound games . . . and five double-doubles . . . he has now scored 548 points with 328 rebounds in his career . . . 72 blocks (9th NE-10). junior forward GREG TWOMEY averages 13.1 points (leads the the team, 24th in NE-10) . . . he has 11 double-figure scoring games . . . his 25 points at Bentley and 21 at Saint Michael's are season-highs . . . season-high 10 rebounds at Saint Anselm . . . leads the team with 49 assists (14th NE-10) with a season-high seven vs. LeMoyne and leads the team in floor accuracy (.517) making 74-for-143 . . . he has made 20 of his last 30 shots from the floor . . . he also shoots .827 from the line (43-for-52) (14th NE-10), averages 5.8 rebounds and has 21 steals (all second on the team, 13th NE-10). . . PHAYRE NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: sophomore guard BETH PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) averaged 18.5 points (5-for-12 threes, 12-for-14 free throws), two assists and two steals in a 1-1 week. Scored 14 points with four steals against Bryant and 23 points (four threes) in a win at Saint Michael's. She also was named to the Worcester Area Honor Roll. WOMENS HOOP NOTES: the Greyhounds have won five of their last seven games . . . their stingy defense has allowed just 51.5 points per game in 2007 . . . head coach Kerry Phayre is now 169-130 in her 11th season with the Greyhounds and will coach her 300th game with the team Wednesday vs. Massachusetts Lowell. junior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) averages 11.8 points (second) and 8.3 rebounds (first), shoots .617 from the floor (66-for-107) (first) and has 42 steals (first) . . . she has 797 career points and undoubtedly will become the 24th Greyhound to reach 800 Wednesday vs. UMass Lowell . . . she has a good chance to become merely the FIFTH Greyhound women's player to reach 1,000 points in her junior year following only STACY MATTIOLI (1996-01) (1,791), KATIE KERR (1996-00) (1,530), MEGHAN SULLIVAN (1999-03) (1,468) and JOY BARRY (1989-93) (1,218) . . . INDOOR SCHEDULE: MORE GREYHOUND NEWS KRISTIN GAUVIN '05, who ran track for the Greyhounds (2002-04) is now a Los Angeles Laker Girl. While at Assumption College, Gauvin majored in Business Management, earning Dean's List honors and graduating cum laude. Drawing upon 17 years of dance experience, she helped establish the College's first dance team. She was a candidate for a Fulbright Scholarship during her senior year. Off-campus, Gauvin was a member of the New England Patriots cheerleading squad, serving as captain during the 2003 season and cheering at the 2004 Super Bowl. During the same season, she was named the team's Cheerleader of the Year, which enabled her to travel to the 2004 Pro Bowl with 24 of the NFL's best cheerleaders. She was voted as the NFL Cheerleader of the Year in voting conducting on the nfl.com website after the 2004 season. She was crowned Miss Massachusetts (2005) and later competed for the Miss America title. EIGHT HOUNDS TEAMS POST 3.0 GPA: eight Greyhound teams have posted a 3.0 grade point average as a team as first semester grades are released: women's tennis (3.31), women's cross country (3.27), women's basketball (3.17), women's softball (3.139), men's cross country (3.136), women's lacrosse (3.11), women's rowing (3.07) and men's golf (3.02). CHRIS BIRD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA: junior goalkeeper CHRIS BIRD has been named to the second-team of the insidelacrosse.com preseason all-America selections recently released. Bird posted a .625 save percentage last season in 14 games (839 minutes) with 225 saves. He was also named one of three tri-captains for the 2007 season. HOUNDS HALL OF FAMER NAMED AT CINCINNATI: Greyhounds Hall of Famer BRIAN KELLY '83 was introduced Dec. 4 as the new head football coach the University of Cincinnati (the Big East Conference). Kelly, who served as head coach at 1-A Central Michigan previously (2004-06) also coached at Division II Grand Valley State leading the Lakers to a pair of national titles. He was the keynote speaker at the Hounds football gala in August and was also inducted into the Hall of Fame that evening. He was a standout player and later coach for the Hounds.
