College Weekly Sports Notes WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore guard PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) scored a career-high 24 points including five three-pointers as Assumption College defeated the College of Saint Rose, 83-79, in men's basketball in an overtime thriller Saturday at the Laska Gym. The Greyhounds are now 11-13 overall, 9-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference and still in contention to host a first-round playoff game. Saint Rose, which has received votes in the national poll and is regionally ranked No. 2, is now 18-7 overall and 14-6 in the conference. The win was the 300th in the long career of Assumption College Coach SERGE DEBARI '71. DeBari's career record now stands at 300-239 as he nears the end of his 21st year of coach---15 years at Babson College (224-151)---and the last seven of his career at Assumption. ![]() DeBari, who was elected to the College's Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978, left the school as its career scoring leader with 1,493 points from 1967-71. He was named to the New England Hall of Fame this past fall as both a player and a coach. Shea scored 11 of the Greyhounds final 16 points in regulation including three top-of-the-circle three-pointers and then contributed the go-ahead three-pointer that put his team in front to stay, 80-79, with 51 seconds left in overtime. Playing well in a support role for the Greyhounds was freshman guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) who finished with 17 points on seven-for-10 floor accuracy, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Junior forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) (12 points), junior forward COREY DIETHORN (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) (11 points, team-high 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals) and senior guard MIKE TAFT (Avon, CT/Avon) (11 points, 2 steals) also reached double figures. The Golden Knights stormed back from a seven-point deficit at halftime (37-30) to move in front 69-60 with 2:52 remaining. The Greyhounds then came back and retook the lead with 25 seconds left on a Shea three-pointer. Taft made his third three-pointer of the game on a feed from Shea, Bluford then made a steal and driving lay-up. After Diethorn blocked a shot inside, Shea drilled another three-pointer on a feed from Bluford to make it a one point game, 69-68. Moments later Diethorn made a key steal and fed Shea for another three pointer from the left wing that put the Greyhounds in front, 71-69. The Golden Knights tied the game and sent it to the overtime period on an offensive rebound with four seconds left. The Hounds jumped out quickly to start the overtime as Diethorn scored inside however Saint Rose scored the next eight points to move to a 79-73 advantage with 2:40 left. It would prove to be their final offense of the game. Senior guard LEROY BYRON (Worcester, MA/North) made a lane jumper just inside the foul line followed by a drive and layin by Twomey to cut the gap to two points, 79-77. Shea connected on a long three-pointer, this time from the right wing off a feed from Bluford, to put the Hounds ahead (80-79) to stay. Bluford made one free throw and Taft a pair in the waning seconds to ice it. The first half belonged to the Greyhounds as they held a 22-14 edge on the boards including eight on the offensive glass. Bluford led the scoring with nine points. The Greyhounds took the lead 10-9 on a offensive rebound by Diethorn and put back . . . not nearly as spectacular as his first points of the game, a two-handed dunk off an offensive rebound 1:02 into the game. They would lead by as many as 10 points at 22-12---following a freshman forward RENAN MALAFAIA (Wellesley, MA/Newton North) free throw with 11:43 remaining and again at 33-23 following a Malafaia lane jumper with 5:22 remaining. Urban started the streak with a short jumper followed by two free throws by Plasski. The Knights made both ends of a two-shot foul before Urban made two of her own to make it 40-36.
