Unbeaten MENS TENNIS wins 9th straight NE-10;
Expect N.C.A.A. seedings, pairings Wednesday
Greyhounds dominate all-conference awards
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Top-seeded
and I.T.A. Nationally Ranked (No. 40) Assumption College defeated Bentley College,
5-0, to win its ninth straight Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis championship
SUNDAY at the Bryant University Tennis Courts. The Greyhounds swept all three
doubles points to open the match and subsequently added wins at No. 4 and No.
5 singles to clinch the victory.
NORTHEAST-10
CONFERENCE HONORS
Junior ANTONIO RECALDE
has been named the 2007 Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Vern Cox Player-of-the-Year.
Recalde posted an 11-0 record at No. 1 singles in conference play and was 13-1
overall. He also owns an 11-1 record at No. 1 doubles. Recalde also earned all-conference
first-team singles and doubles honors.
Greyhounds Coach JOHN
IPPOLITO was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year for the fifth time
(2000, 01, 03, 05, 07), as selected by the 11 Northeast-10 coaches. Ippolito
has led the Greyhounds to a 16-0 record so far this season and a conference
record 117 match-winning streak.
Joining Recalde on the
all-conference first-team for singles was No. 2 MATT STOPP and No. 3
JARED DORFMAN. DAVE MARSHALL earned second-team singles honors
at No. 4.
Recalde-Stopp (No. 1 doubles) and Dorfman-Marshall (No. 2 doubles)
both earned first-team accolades.
At No. 1 doubles, junior
ANTONIO RECALDE (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay/San Isador Labrador) and senior
captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) improved their overall record
to 11-1 winning over Bentley's Greg Avola and Greg Maloomian, 8-6. They beat
the same duo by the same score in the regular-season match at Bentley (April
10, 2007).
Sophomore JARED DORFMAN
(So., Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy) and DAVID MARSHALL (Sr., Newington,
CT/Kingswood Oxford) defeated Bentley's Miles Holman and Patrick Schorno, 8-5,
at No. 2 doubles.
Junior RICH LIEBERMAN
(East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale Ray) and freshman TOM NOWAK (Medfield, MA/Medfield)
defeated the Falcon's Mike Dolan and Mike Mc Crillis, 8-3.
In singles senior DAVID
MARSHALL (Newington, CT/Kingswood Oxford) defeated Bentley's Mike McCrillis
in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while freshman TOM NOWAK (Medfield, MA/Medfield)
stopped Mike Dolan at No. 5, winning 6-4, 6-1.
The win was Assumption's
20th-straight conference tournament match victory and 117th consecutive win
over a conference opponent dating back to April 15, 1998.
The Greyhounds will play
in their eighth consecutive N.C.A.A. Division II Northeast Regional Tournament
scheduled for May 3-5 at a site to be determined. Opponents, times of matches
and the tournament site will be announced by the N.C.A.A. on Wednesday.

NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE/ECAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: senior outfielder SARAH
LEARY (Seymour, CT/Seymour) batted .548 (17-for-31, 8 runs, 4 doubles, 3
homers, 12 RBI), slugged .968 (30 total bases) and had an on-base percentage
of .548 in a 5-3 week. In game one against LeMoyne, went 3-for-4 with the game-tying
home run in the 7th inning to force extra innings. In a doubleheader against
Bentley, was 3-for-9 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBI. In a
doubleheader with Queens was 6-for-8 with two doubles, three runs scored and

(Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) accumulated 28.50 points at the Connecticut College
Silfen Invitational to help the team to a third-place finish in the event. She
won the 100-meter race (13.25), 200-meter race (27.59), and ran the second leg
of the winning 4x100 relay team (52.43). She also finished third in the triple
jump with a distance of 33 3.25. She was also named the E.C.A.C. Athlete-of-the-Week.
MEN'S TRACK FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: post-graduate JOE KOWALCZYK

(Sandy, UT/Juan Diego, Catholic) has 20 points at the Connecticut College Silfen
Invitational to help the team to a third place finish in the event. Won the
shot put with a distance of 39-01.25 (11.92m) and the discus with a distance

OPENS its season in 2007 hosting Division I-AA Sacred Heart University
at the Multi-Sports Stadium in its first-ever THURSDAY night opener, August
30 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
MEN'S BASKETBALL will open its 2007-08 season with an EXHIBITION
GAME at the University of Connecticut November 1 . . . UConn assistant Tom
Moore once served as an aide here at Assumption College . . . both the men
and women are expected to play for real in the Disney World Classic in early
November.

FAMER TOM O'CONNOR '68 was recently inducted (March 22) to the Hudson County,
NJ Sports Hall of Fame. O'Connor, who is a member of the Greyhounds Hall of
Fame, is the current Director of Athletics at George Mason University and recently
served as the chairman of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament selection
committee. He joins ex-Hounds Joe O'Brien '57, Fred Barakat '61, Serge DeBari
'71, and Eric Inauen '69.
